Please provide the following fields; if you are not a student enter zero for student number:

The following fields are optional, but it will be very helpful for our scientific research if you fill them in. As a reward, users who complete all the fields will be entered into a yearly prize draw for £100.
If you choose to fill in these fields, please do so accurately. Participants with inaccurate personal data will be removed from the database and not allowed to re-register. See our privacy policy and participant rules below for further details.

If you provide your phone number, we may be able to contact you in case of last minute changes.

Participant Rules

  • Registering for our database does not commit you to taking part in any experiments. You will receive emails inviting you to participate in experimental sessions. Only people who have signed up for a session may participate in that session.
  • Please arrive on time to all experimental sessions that you sign up for. If you cannot make the start time for a session for any reason, please email essexlab@essex.ac.uk giving at least 24 hours’ notice of your cancellation.
  • If more participants arrive on time than are required for an experiment, the experimenter will select participants to be included. Non-selected participants will be sent away with a show-up fee of £4.
  • If you arrive late, and the session has already started, do not attempt to enter the laboratory or knock on the door. Doing so will disrupt the session. Late participants are not entitled to a show-up fee. You may contact essexlab@essex.ac.uk after the session if you feel there are extenuating circumstances.
  • Please bring a form of identity (your Essex student/staff card, driving license, passport or other recognized ID) to all sessions.
  • Participants who repeatedly fail to show up for experiments, or arrive late, may not be invited for further experiments, and/or may be removed from the experimental database and disqualified from future participation.
  • When in the laboratory, obey the instructions of the experimenters and Laboratory staff at all times. Failure to do so may lead to you being asked to leave the laboratory and disqualified from future participation.
  • While in the session, unless you are otherwise instructed, please remain silent and do not communicate with other participants. If you have a question, raise your hand and wait for an experimenter to advise you.
  • Participants on our database must be over 18.
  • Participants may only maintain one identity on the Laboratory database. Participants who deliberately maintain multiple identities will be removed from the database and disqualified from future participation.
  • Please record your personal data accurately on the database. Participants with inaccurate personal data may be removed from the database. ESSEXLab maintains high standards of confidentiality and privacy. For details of our privacy policy, see our privacy policy.
  • You may remove your details from the database at any time. To do so, contact essexlab@essex.ac.uk.
  • These rules and the privacy policy may be updated from time to time. We will notify you of major changes in the rules.

Privacy policy

  • When you sign up for our database, we will ask for your demographic and other personal details. This information will only be used by researchers registered with ESSEXLab when choosing subjects to invite to participate in studies. It will not be made available to any other organization, or for any other purpose than selecting subjects for experiments, informing subjects about upcoming experiments, and monitoring attendance at booked experimental sessions.
  • Some of the personal details we request are optional. You do not have to provide them, but if you do not do so you may be invited to fewer experiments.
  • In the future, we may link demographic data from the participant database to data generated during experiments. If so, this will be done in such a way as to preserve anonymity, i.e. individually identifying information will not be linked to experimental data.
  • The participant database is stored in the Data Archive’s secure servers, which are certified to ISO 27001, the international security standard.
  • Decisions taken by participants during experimental sessions will be recorded by the computer software. These decisions will not be linked with your personal data stored on the ESSEXLab Online Recruitment System. Unless otherwise stated during the session, your choices during the experiment will be anonymous, and payments are made privately and confidentially.
  • All research done in the Lab has passed ethical requirements, including requirements for confidentiality. See the University of Essex's ethical procedures here.
  • You are entitled to remove your data from the participant database at any time. To do so, please contact essexlab@essex.ac.uk.
